Healing the Discarded - The Power of Redemption in the Prison System
(my largest and most expansive project to date)
Client: Personal Project
About the doc: This film features Tobias Tubbs, who was incarcerated for 28 years. He’s been given a second chance, one he thought he’d never get. How has this formerly incarcerated person been able to heal, not just himself, but help others find their way back to peace and deliverance within California's worst prisons?
Role: Director, editor, camera, etc.
Artistic/Impact Statement: Tobias Tubbs (the protagonist) and I see this film as a journey between the both of us. As he says “our relationship was never meant to be.” The prison system never wanted a man sentenced to life in prison to ever make a beautiful piece of art with a white USC student - yet we’ve done it. Tobias and other prison system-impacted individuals have been deeply involved in the whole process of the film from the treatment through the editing process. I believe in making documentaries WITH community, not just for community.
Through this film, I aim to shed light on the importance of healing and redemption, while addressing the need for comprehensive support and counseling services for incarcerated individuals.
In collaborating with Tobias and the prison communities involved, I approach the project with utmost respect, sensitivity, and openness. I recognize the complexity and depth of their experiences and the need to honor their voices authentically. By actively listening and engaging with these individuals and communities, I ensure that their stories are accurately portrayed and their perspectives are given the platform they deserve.
I want this film to catalyze conversations. Within criminal justice communities but also communities that have little exposure to the prison system. Tobias and I are committed to having those conversations after each film. We hope to inspire viewers to reconsider their preconceptions and recognize the immense potential for redemption and transformation within every individual, regardless of their past.
